Huun-Huur-Tu: Live 1 (a.k.a. Best*Live).
No studio recording can compare to the experience of a Huun-Huur-Tu concert - as countless visitors from all over the world would verify who have experienced one or more of their concerts. Therefore the idea for a live recording has been in the air for quite a while. Various concerts were recorded but none met the artists' expectations until finally in April 2001 everything came together - a place where the musicians felt at home, where they played and sang with just the right inspiration, with one of Moscow's best recording engineers and ... spring in the air. The right time for a band that is able to electrify its listeners like no other. |

Where Young Grass Grows. Huun-Huur-Tu is making the inevitable move toward globalization that comes with worldwide touring and collaboration with foreign musicians, but so far they have managed to retain their own unique identity and remain firmly rooted in Tuvan traditional sounds. By now the novel aspects of multi-tonal throat singing do not need to be featured to help sell their work. Compared to their previous albums there is a richer harmonic (in the traditional Western sense) texture, and such Tuvan anomalies as the harp, Scottish pipes, and synthesizer make their appearance. However, they remain unobtrusively in the background (the synthesizer is used to generate a virtual wind storm), and one gets the sense that the quartet has a mature, rooted sense of where they want to go with their music. |

60 Horses in My Herd. Huun-Huur-Tu revive an ancient repertoire, with hoomei throat-singing claiming central position. Three out of four band members sing, also playing igil, doshpuluur and guitar, while the percussionist blows conch, thumps shamanistically on a goat-skin drum and rattles sheep's ankle bones encased in bull testicles. The multiphonic vocals emerge from the deepest wells of expression, oscillating between melody and droning, sending out frequencies not usually associated with the human voice. The Tuvan International is a rousing masterpiece and Song Of The Caravan Drivers is played in honor of Frank Zappa, being a favorite when they worked together on his final epic. |

If I'd Been Born an Eagle. The Tuvan quartet Huun-Huur-Tu is helped out by an equal number of guests on If I'd Been Born an Eagle, the group's third album. This album includes both traditional and modern works and combines indigenous throat singing with folk harmonies that can be traced to the Russian influence on the region. This music is both very spiritual and down to earth, grounded in a strong sense of place, yet its appeal is universal. The group bridges the gap between old and new like few others. |

The Orphan's Lament. A work of well-produced art, contemporary offerings in traditional Tuvan styles, not an ethno musicological assay. Its 16 pieces in styles varying from unison Kargyraa chants to political songs to khomus ("Jews' harp") solos provide a tour-de-force of Tuvan styles designed for listening pleasure and wonderment. Master khoomigch Kaigal-ool Khovalyg's deeply touching igil playing is a real highlight of the album. His frequent vocal solos in all styles, and those of the sweet-voiced Anatoli Kuular, joined by Mergen Mongush for one sygyt cut, help place this album among the two or three must-have's for anyone who enjoys authentic Tuvan music. |
